Kybella Injections at Skin Therapeutics

Kybella injections reduce the appearance of a double chin by destroying fat cells beneath the chin area. It was developed by Allergan, the makers of Botox. Kybella recovery times are short, and the risk of complication from the procedure is low.

The active ingredient in the injections is a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid, a bile acid naturally produced in your stomach to absorb fat. When injected into your chin, the acid gradually kills fat cells over the course of several weeks. The dead cells are naturally metabolized and eliminated from the body, leaving you with a slimmer, more sculpted profile.

To fully resculpt the chin, most people undergo 2–4 Kybella injection sessions scheduled 6 weeks apart. Your results from each session will be fully realized in 4–6 weeks after the appointment. What to Expect During Your Kybella Session

To begin your Kybella treatment, our registered nurse/licensed esthetician will take “before” photos to establish a baseline for your results and will then apply a topical numbing cream under your chin. While the numbing cream starts to take effect, she maps out the injection sites with a temporary tattoo dot grid; this process ensures the injections will be spaced evenly for uniform results. 

Next, the injections will begin. One Kybella session typically consists of 20–30 injections using a tiny needle. Each injection is quick, and the entire process takes only about five minutes. Most patients report a burning sensation while the active ingredient begins to take effect, but this feeling lasts only for a few minutes. 

Between injections, we’ll give you an ice pack to cool your chin and ward off any discomfort. Once all the injections have been administered, we’ll wrap your chin up with a compression bandage to reduce swelling. Because Kybella doesn’t require sedation, you’ll be able to drive home after your appointment, experiencing only some soreness. 

Over the next few days, you’ll see swelling (caused by the deoxycholic acid breaking down fat cells) that peaks 24 hours after the session and can last from 2 days to 3 weeks. Most people experience higher levels of swelling after their first treatment and less after subsequent injection sessions. Minor bruising and bleeding may also occur.

After approximately 6 weeks, the full results of your injections will be visible. You’ll then be able to undergo a second round of injections to sculpt the chin further. Most people report seeing the most dramatic results after their second session, after which we’ll be able to assess how many additional treatments will be necessary to achieve the look you want.

Complementary Treatments

Many of our clients choose to pair their Kybella injections with an anti-aging treatment. The most common choices are:

• RF microneedling: This procedure combines the benefits of skin firming radio frequency energy with those of traditional microneedling, which creates microinjuries to improve skin texture and tone while promoting collagen and elastin production

Does Kybella have any side effects?

The most common side effects associated with Kybella are swelling, temporary soreness, minor bruising and bleeding. Some people experience small, hard lumps at the injection sites that disappear after a few days. A rarer side effect is temporary nerve damage, which can cause numbness in the lower jaw that lasts several months.

How many treatments will I need?

Most people require 2–4 Kybella sessions. At your consultation, we will assess how many treatments you’ll likely need. That being said, every person’s reaction to Kybella is different. Our philosophy is to continue treatments until you’re satisfied, which may turn out to be additional or fewer appointments than initially estimated.

How long will results last?

Kybella treatments are long-lasting with the majority of patients worldwide reporting they’ve maintained their results 5 years after undergoing treatment. However, the success of your treatment depends on your maintaining a healthy lifestyle and not gaining weight; Kybella does not destroy every fat cell under your chin, therefore the remaining cells can still grow larger.

How Much Do Kybella Injections Cost?

The total cost of your Kybella treatment depends largely on how much of the product is administered. Kybella is priced by the vial, and 2–3 vials are usually used per session. In the US, the average cost of a single Kybella treatment is between $1,000 and $1,500.
