What are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers are a gel-like substance that are injected into the face to target volume loss, fine lines and recessed scars. As you age, the subcutaneous layer of fat directly below the skin naturally becomes thinner. Dermal filler treatments replace that lost fat with a soft gel, filling out your face for a more youthful look.
Skin Therapeutics offers three different types of dermal fillers to fit your needs; hyaluronic acid, poly-L-lactic acid and resilient hyaluronic acid.
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring substance in the body that helps to keep the skin hydrated and firm. Your natural hyaluronic acid levels lower with age, leading to a loss of volume in the face and the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.
HA fillers are known to safely and temporarily restore volume to the skin and smooth out wrinkles and fine lines. They’re also effective at plumping up the lips and filling in hollow areas around the eyes and cheeks.
Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) fillers are made of a biodegradable synthetic material that stimulates collagen production in the skin, thus improving skin thickness and health for a more youthful look. This type of filler is often used to treat deep wrinkles and folds, such as the nasolabial folds (the lines that run from the nose to the corners of the mouth).
Resilient hyaluronic acid (RHA) fillers contain modified or cross-linked hyaluronic acid. These dermal fillers are used for facial augmentation, to fill in lines and wrinkles, enhance facial contours, and add volume to areas of the face that have lost fullness due to aging or other factors.
Resilient hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are more stable and durable products that last longer than non-cross-linked hyaluronic acid. They’re also less likely to migrate or move from the injection site.

Dermal filler treatments have many benefits including:

- Defined facial contours
- Increased fullness of the midface and chin
- Reduced appearance of recessed scars
- Sharper, more defined jawline

Additionally, pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid dermal fillers, and those with active skin infections or inflammation should wait until the condition resolves before undergoing treatment.
Before & Afters
The results of dermal fillers are generally long-lasting, although not permanent. The duration of the results will depend on the type of filler used, the area treated and the individual’s body chemistry. HA fillers typically last between 6–12 months and PLLA fillers can last up to two years. RA fillers last 12–18 months.
What to Expect at Your Dermal Filler Appointment
Two days prior to your dermal filler appointment, do not wax, tweeze, bleach or use hair removal products on the treatment area. Avoid alcohol, aspirin and anti-inflammatory drugs for at least 24 hours before your treatment as this can increase the risk of bleeding and bruising at the injection site.
Arrive at your appointment with a freshly washed face free of makeup, creams or lotions.
Your board-certified injector will first clean and numb the treatment area with lidocaine, an anesthetic. Then, they’ll inject the filler into the skin using a fine needle or cannula. The injection process usually takes only a few minutes.
Recovery and aftercare
After the procedure, patients may experience some swelling, redness, and bruising in the treated area. However, these side effects are usually mild and typically resolve within a few days.

Dermal Fillers FAQ
Are dermal fillers safe?
Yes, filler injections are generally considered safe when performed by a board-certified, qualified injector. But as with any cosmetic procedure, they carry some risks. These risks include asymmetry, bruising, itching, migration, redness and swelling.
Can fillers replace a facelift?
While dermal fillers can provide significant changes to your facial appearance, they do not completely mimic the results of plastic surgery. Some clients choose dermal fillers as a temporary solution to cosmetic issues they will later address with surgery. Dermal fillers and plastic surgery can also be used together for optimal results.
Can the procedure be reversed?
Yes, hyaluronic acid filler injections can be reversed with an enzyme known as hyaluronidase. Injecting this enzyme into the treated area dissolves the hyaluronic acid, breaking it down into particles that your body will absorb and metabolize.
